Shamrock Civil claims Victory at 2026 AIB Professional Excellence Awards

Delivering Excellence for Defence: Shamrock Civil Wins QLD AIB Infrastructure Award

Shamrock Civil is proud to announce that we have been awarded the Infrastructure Award at the 2026 Australian Institute of Building (AIB) Professional Excellence Awards, held last Friday night, for the successful delivery of the Greenbank Training Area MTR-1 Project.

The award recognises excellence in the management and delivery of infrastructure projects and reflects the dedication, innovation and professionalism demonstrated by our team throughout the delivery of this critical Defence facility.

A special congratulations goes to Senior Project Manager Colin Wilson, whose leadership was instrumental in the successful delivery of the project. Colin led a high-performing team through a complex 42-week construction program, maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, stakeholder engagement and operational excellence while navigating significant project challenges.

Delivered for Augility on behalf of the Department of Defence, the $7.6 million project involved the refurbishment and structural upgrade of the existing MTR-1 range at Greenbank Training Area, transforming it into a sophisticated 10-lane Type A Marksmanship Training Range for the Australian Defence Force. The scope included demolition works, major earthworks, construction of a new firing mound and control room, retaining walls, specialist pavements, advanced targetry systems and extensive communications and electrical infrastructure.

The project was not without its challenges. The team successfully managed 66 days of weather-related delays caused by cyclone activity and persistent wet weather, while also responding to evolving design requirements. Through proactive planning and re-sequencing of works, Shamrock Civil maintained project momentum and delivered a facility that met the stringent operational requirements of Defence.

Innovation and value creation played a significant role in the project’s success. The team implemented a sustainable onsite material management strategy that eliminated the need for imported fill, reducing both costs and environmental impacts. Strategic procurement initiatives also helped mitigate a potential $100,000 cost increase, ensuring value for the client while maintaining project quality.

Beyond construction, the project demonstrated Shamrock Civil’s commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and industry development. The team implemented a digital-first management approach using HammerTech, delivered comprehensive environmental management initiatives, supported local wildlife habitat restoration and provided valuable training opportunities for apprentices and local school students through the CSQ Pathways Program.

This award is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our project team, client, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers who contributed to the successful delivery of this important piece of Defence infrastructure.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Greenbank Training Area MTR-1 Project. This recognition reflects the capability, resilience and commitment that define the Shamrock Civil team, and we are honoured to see this project recognised on a national stage.
