Kin Kora Intersection Upgrade (Stage 2)

A joint funding initiative of the Australian and Queensland governments, the Kin Kora Intersection Upgrade improves the safety and capacity of Gladstone’s busiest intersection. The project involved removing a roundabout and constructing a new traffic signal controlled intersection. The transition from a roundabout, to signalised intersection, was achieved within a 56-hour period.

Scope of Works:

• Relocation of underground service including replacing and re-aligning 45 metres of sewerage pipes, 700 metres of new stormwater drainage pipe, water pipes and associated utilities and infrastructure
• Removal of the Kin Kora roundabout
• Erection of 21 traffic signal posts and footings
• Bulk earthworks and removal of material from project area
• Removal of centre medians on Dawson Highway and Philip Street
• Removal of trees/vegetation from project footprint
• Road widenings and construction of new lanes
• Construction of new footpaths
• Installation of two new bus stops
• Upgraded retention basin.

Stakeholder engagement

• Maintaining peak traffic flows and access to businesses, including the city’s major shopping complex, was non-negotiable. Traffic changes and lane closures occurred at night, with all traffic movements and access maintained during the day.
• Activities included regular stakeholder engagement and prior notification for all construction activities, including changes affecting any business accesses.
• Over 200 stakeholder interactions were recorded including a fortnightly email to local stakeholders, attendance at the quarterly retailers meetings, shopping centre displays and regular face-to-face meetings with local businesses.
• Shamrock Civil worked closely with Gladstone Regional Council officers to ensure water impacts to local residents and businesses were kept to a minimum and were completed in a timely manner.
