Shamrock Civil Engineering were awarded the civil works package for the LAND4502 Phase 1 Additional CH-47 Chinook project by Lendlease. The overall project involved providing facilities and infrastructure to support three additional Chinook helicopters for the 5th aviation regiment at RAAF Base Townsville.

Scope of Work

  • 21,500m3 of spoil removed across the site
  • Two Detention Basins: to rear of new hangers & within the airside zone
  • Approx. 1000m of new stormwater installed with RCP sizes ranging 375mmand 750mm. PVC pipes installed to catch water from the roof down pipes. A1.3m deep grated drain installed to the front of the hangers.
  • Pavement for airside hardstand and new apron to front of hangers has a sub soil drainage network of 160mm corrugated PVC pipes to prevent ingress of water to new pavement. These pipes discharge to the grated drain.
  • Installation of SPEL Stormceptor and Hydrosystem tanks designed to cleanand treat stormwater removing gross pollutants, dissolved nutrients andheavy metals.
  • Extension of Chinook hardstand area with a 6 layer pavement of varying materials to make up the new hardstand of 1075mm. Approx 10,000m2 of additional pavement area was added to the existing hardstand.
  • Three concrete areas constructed as additional Chinook parking bays. Madeup of 6 layers of varying materials.
  • Precinct civil works included a new car park, driveway accessing the hangars and pavement apron servicing new hangars. Temporary and new gravel overflow car parks were also constructed.
  • Kerb & channeling was constructed on several faces of the building. Otherconcrete works include concrete footpath, bin slabs, container tie downslabs and pedestrian foot bridge to south west of new hangers.

Project Complications & Achievements

Shamrock Civil successfully delivered this project on time and within budget.
