Overview
Cockram Construction awarded Shamrock Civil Engineering the works package to replace an existing 1,200m running track, two tennis courts and one basketball court which were deemed to have reached their end of useful life at the Army Aviation Centre, Oakey. The works were completed over three stages all requiring suitable base course designed and constructed to be appropriate for a highly reactive black soil environment.
Scope of works
- Clearing and grubbing
- Location and protection of services
- Earthworks including 875mm deep box out, 3.3m wide for the length of the 1.2km running track resulting in the cartage and disposal of 7,600t of PFAS & Asbestos Comingled material
- Installation of 250mm of type 2.3 roadbase & 150mm layer of Type 2.1 roadbase to the underside of the 25mm asphalt surface
- Installation of a flush kerb each side of the new running track
- Control of sediment and erosion, including the receipt of the soil disposal permit
- There was an isolated ‘hot spot’ of high PFAS contaminates which required onsite treatment and retesting until it was able to be disposed of offsite.
