Shamrock Civil Engineering were awarded the project for the decommissioning, removal and investigation of a redundant Underground Storage Tank and associated infrastructure at RAAF Base Townsville.

Scope of Work

  • Environmental sampling and testing of products inside the existing tank to identify what it is and any specific procedural requirements necessary for its removal and disposal
  •  Excavate around tank to allow removal
  • Removal and disposal of Underground Storage Tank (UST) 048 and associated infrastructure
  • Removal of the associated sewer and vent pipes from this tank
  • Plumbing and drainage work including installation of DN100 sewer pipe, two sewer inspection manholes with internal HDPE lined and access to existing sewer line
  • Rerouting of Building 246 greywater to a new manhole and access point to an existing sewer line on the northwest side of the building
  • Excavation and management of waste materials
  • Reinstatement of all work area excavations and surfaces using 3% CTB and concrete pavers pavement
  • Traffic management due to lane closure in the main entrance
  • Silt socks and other environmental controls were in place during the works
  • Complied with all relevant Australian Standards aligned to the removal of Underground Storage Tanks

Project Complications & Achievements

Shamrock Civil successfully delivered this project on time, within budget and with zero LTI’s recorded. Shamrock Civil complied with the Defence requirements for management of PFAS contaminated materials on this job.
